TALKING POINTS
-- I support A-1913, the death penalty study bill that unanimously passed the Senate (34-0) and overwhelming passed the General Assembly (70-8). This is a common-sense bill and I urge you to sign it into law
-- New Jersey's experience with the death penalty has been characterized by significant expenditures of money and time.
-- Despite the fact that no one has been executed in New Jersey, we are concerned that New Jersey could soon resume executions. The state has a responsibility to review the record of the death penalty and the realities of this ultimate, irreversible and highly controversial punishment. The execution of an innocent person by the state of New Jersey would be a grave and irreversible injustice
-- The bill would create a 13-member commission and give it 18 months to complete its task. The commission would study everything from fairness to cost effectiveness.
What's wrong with taking a hard look at this issue after 22 years? The governor should reconsider and sign the bill.
